Automated Meter Reading, or AMR, is already accepted in many countries - throughout Scandinavia, for example, laws are being passed requiring digital utility meters in all homes.
Why the shift? Because AMR reduces costs, improves service and adds value. Using M2M and GPRS to gather information, utility companies can instantly monitor actual consumption, thereby optimizing their distribution networks and minimizing power outages.
Conservation is positively impacted as well. A Swedish Energy Authority investigation recently found that when energy bills are tied to actual usage, consumption goes down - a prime reason why Sweden passed a law mandating monthly reading of all electricity meters by 2009.
Finally, cost analyses have shown that for a mid-sized utility of two million customers, $300-450 million in annual savings can be realized after an initial five-year capital outlay payback period. With energy costs soaring worldwide, it’s a no-brainer.
So how is cost-effective AMR over cellular networks accomplished? In the field, usage data from small clusters of residential meters is typically fed to a small data concentrator, often using Power Line Carrier or unlicensed radio spectrum. The data concentrator, in turn, uses GPRS or 1xRTTfor IP service uplink to transmit consolidated information back-office systems at set times of day as well as, on demand, from the central office systems to the individual meter. A secure VPN ensures that data remains uncompromised.
The facts are clear: automated meter reading is a better model for long-term efficiency and savings. Throw in the prospect of value-added services including prepaid metering and time-of-use pricing - not to mention no more surly dogs and slammed doors for utility company personnel - and it’s easy to see why AMR is set to grow.
