At KORE, we take pride in recognizing each of the incredible leaders who bring expertise and drive to the IoT industry. Without these innovators, we would not be able to bring you the connectivity solutions that transform businesses and make operations easier. This month, we are thrilled to shine a light on Emily Baker, KORE’s Senior Human Resources Director.
Emily has been in HR for nearly 20 years, the last 6 of which have been here at KORE. In her last few years at Winston-Salem State University (Go Rams!), Emily discovered a passion for HR and assisted in establishing the student chapter of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management). When she isn’t working, you can find her spending time with family, friends, and her dogs. She has a Labradoodle named Stitch and a Chihuahua mix named Beauty – who is a much-loved menace!
Q: When it comes to lifestyle and your home, are you a minimalist or a maximalist? Why?
A: I’m a wannabe minimalist with maximalist tendencies! I’m a sentimental person, so I would love to keep all. the. things. But I dislike clutter and disorganization, so a pandemic interest in Marie Kondo helped me up my minimalist game. I have learned that keeping a minimal number of truly cherished items that provide maximal feels is a great balance and works well for me, so you’ll find most decorative items in my home and office are created by or have a connection to friends, family and places that are close to my heart.
Q: Are you a movie or a book person or both? Any recommendations?
A: I am more of a book person. I enjoy getting lost in the crime solving thriller Kay Scarpetta Series by Patricia Cornwell and anxiously await each new release. However, I also enjoy a classic, and my favorite is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I believe in lifelong learning so I will read about or watch a documentary or docuseries about almost anything! A docuseries I think everyone will both enjoy and benefit from watching is Living to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, which explores how the sense of community, daily habits and diets in specific areas of the world contribute to people living extraordinarily long and healthy lives.
Q: Are there any causes/charities you are passionate about? How would you encourage others to support them?
A: My brother is living with a severe traumatic brain injury, and these injuries affect the whole family, as well as the survivor. Ensuring that your loved one gets the proper diagnosis and treatment, as well as supportive rehabilitation or loving long-term care can be very time consuming and demanding for caregivers. The Brain Injury Association of America connects survivors to services, advocates for their needs, supports education and research, and provides a community of support for both survivors and families. I am proud to support that mission. You can help support BIAA here, or choose a cause you feel passionate about and take the first step to get involved – even a small donation or a couple hours of your time can make an impact you can be proud of!
Q: Describe your idea of the perfect day.
A: Any day spent outside enjoying nice weather is one I’m thankful for. It’s been a loooong winter in NY!
Q: What are some personal goals you have for this year?
A: Tone and strength building and traveling more!
Q: What do you feel like you excel most at in your career?
A: Hands down, connecting with people. I genuinely love helping people achieve a goal or overcome a challenge, and finding connection and building trust are vital to that mission. It is something I think most would say defines my HR style.
Q: As someone in HR, what advice can you give someone who is readying their resume or preparing for an interview?
A: Keep your resume short, simple, and relevant. Recruiters receive a lot of resumes, often hundreds, for each role, so ensure they can easily and quickly discover why you’re the most qualified candidate. Using quantifiable examples to highlight significant achievements can help create a quick, clear picture of the results you can deliver. Familiarize yourself with the company and role you are seeking, then tailor your resume and prepare for your interview with that in mind.
Most importantly, be you and be honest! Be your most professional SELF for your interview and always be honest about your experience, education, and skillset.
