For Many Industries, Cellular IoT Connectivity is the Only Viable Option

Think of it this way: cellular IoT connectivity is the reliable, old Jeep that always gets you where you need to go for a really long time. It can handle challenging journeys.  WiFi is the sleek, cherry red sports car that draws gazes wherever it goes – but it can’t always go where you need to be. Both are great, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.

For so many organizations, the Jeep just makes more sense than the sports car. The fact is, cellular connectivity is more widely available, free of wires, mobile and consistently reliable. Here’s why cellular connectivity is a must-have for five important industries:

  • Healthcare – Connectivity is a must. While compliance is a top-line concern for hospitals, the most pressing reason for being always-on is patient privacy and safety. Important data about their conditions must always be accessible to ensure the best care. Cellular blanketing coverage—and failover solutions that ensure drastically reduced downtime should an outage occur—keep healthcare practitioners connected to their patients.
  • Financial services – Banks use cellular IoT connectivity to run their systems because they can’t afford not to. Every minute of downtime can cost them a lot of money. They run the risk of eroding your trust, which is a foundation of success in the industry. These organizations also face steep fines for not protecting their customer’s assets. It’s a job a little too complex for WiFi.
  • Retail – Similar to financial services, business disruptions can mean significant financial losses. And given the multitude of credit and debit card information stored, retail organizations must protect that data to remain PCI compliant. Cellular connectivity makes that easier.
  • Fleet management – Fleets are always moving. To power IoT applications that track their whereabouts, cellular IoT is the only option. And as vehicles move in and out of service areas, eSIM technology will allow them to seamlessly connect to the carrier with the best coverage.
  • Premises security – IoT applications in surveillance rely on cellular to avoid temporary lapses in security. Think of some of the other industries mentioned: healthcare, financial services, fleet management; all employ security systems to protect patients and customers. Relying on connectivity that could drop for extended periods of time just isn’t an option. Additionally, cellular-based encryption protects security cameras from being hacked.

The good news for just about every industry is that connectivity—and all the components required to launch a differentiating IoT application—are becoming easier to access for smaller organizations, who were once priced out of such an option. And with the growing adoption of 4G – which will allow for richer, more granular IoT applications – expect to see a newer, more powerful version of the Jeep rolling off the assembly line soon.
