Overview

Utodas (Up To Date Stock) is a designer, producer, and service provider of sensors and remote monitoring IoT devices for tanks and siloes. Since 2005, Utodas has been a pioneer in the world of powerful telemetry devices and sensors directly in western Europe but also globally.

The Netherlands-based company provides solutions to bulk suppliers and distributors that need field stock data of their outlets. Essentially, Utodas provides the devices that collect data that is then displayed through a user interface enabling the end user to access data that helps them plan and organise new deliveries or onsite collection of fuel, oil, chemicals, feeder, pellets, granulates, drinking water, waste, and recycling materials.

“We enable our users to have cost- and resource-efficient planning and operations, saving money on their bulk logistics,” Utodas Telemetry Systems Manager Michiel Vermeulen said.

The use of IoT in industrial and asset monitoring solutions helps optimise and utilise resources to drive greater efficiency and lower operational and supply costs. Use of Industrial IoT (IIoT) is steadily growing – with a projected 36.8 billion connected IIoT devices by 2025. IoT in assets and logistics is steadily growing, as well, in response to a need for more streamlined monitoring and management of how goods are shipped and received along the entire supply chain.

With its ruggedized hardware intended for remote tank monitoring, Utodas is well-positioned to become the market leader in the Benelux region, Vermeulen said.

The Challenge

Connectivity in IoT solutions can be extremely challenging. Leveraging cellular connectivity in remote and vast areas, and in solutions where connectivity needs to be penetrable, such as in tanks or siloes, adds another layer of complexity.

All of this can lead organizations that provide IoT solutions, such as Utodas, the difficulty of pulling together connectivity that can satisfy all of these needs, which is likely not all from a single carrier or even through a single technology. The ecosystem for connectivity can become very fragmented and difficult to manage under one roof.

“Whilst working with local/domestic connectivity providers, it was hard to establish a long-term B2B relationship for device connectivity,” Vermeulen said. “Outages and sudden cost increases occurred regularly.”

With connectivity becoming a significant hurdle to mitigate, Utodas needed a stable M2M SMS communication platform with secured lines between the network and the Utodas backend systems and dashboard.

The Solution

Utodas turned to KORE to leverage unified connectivity from a single source that is managed on a powerful platform, ConnectivityProTM, so usage, billing, and support systems are managed holistically and in a more simplified manner.

ConnectivityPro is an award-winning, singular platform that simplifies the management of IoT connectivity. With ConnectivityPro, users can manage connectivity, as well as order and provision new SIM cards to make scaling simple and quick. Advanced features include diagnostics, reporting, real-time monitoring of events, usage, and costs, including rule-based actions and alerts.

Results

Because of Utodas using KORE ConnectivityPro, Vermeulen said the organization was able to deliver reliable connectivity with stability in network uptime, reliable delivery of data, and traceability to it’s customers without outages for continuous delivery of the data these organizations rely on to drive operational decisions.

Because of this reliability, Utodas could offer a value proposition that helped drive year-on-year growth in the number of both users and devices in the field. KORE provides IoT solutions that allow customers to focus on the applications they are delivering to the market, without having to worry about the complexities that can arise when deploying, managing, and scaling IoT.

For Utodas, relieving the burden of complicated connectivity delivery and management has allowed the organization to focus, and even expand, its core business. Utodas is growing internationally and is using KORE’s global expertise, knowledge, and presence to make moving into new countries simpler.

“Especially with our ongoing international expansion, having a global connectivity partner takes out the hassle of selecting operators and SIM providers for new areas,” Vermeulen said.

With global expansion comes needing the knowledge of local carriers, connectivity technologies, and telecommunications and data regulations. KORE is uniquely positioned with its global footprint serving more than 190 countries via its 13 worldwide offices and 8 global data centers.
